- Evaluation of Antihyperlipidemic Activity of Mimusops elengi L. in Triton WR- 1339 Induced Hyperlipidaemia in Rats

Objective: The present study was undertaken to explore antihyperlipidemic effect of ethanolic extract of Mimusops elengi L. (ME) in Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in rats. Materials and methods: The wistar rats were divided in to Normal control (NC), Hyperlipidemic group (HG), Fenofibrate group (FG), Mimusops elengi L. (ME) treated groups (100, 300, 600 mg/kg, p.o.). Hyperlipidemia in all groups was induced by single i.p. injection of Triton WR-1339 at a dose of 200 mg/kg except normal control. Result: The groups treated with Mimusops elengi L. showed significant reduction (p<0.01) in levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol as compared to HG after 7 and 24 h of induction. Even after 48 h the groups treated with Mimusops elengi L. showed significant decrease (p<0.01) in level of triglyceride in groups ME 300, ME 600 and significant decrease (p<0.05) in level of total cholesterol in groups ME 300, ME 600 respectively as compared to HG. Moreover HDL level was significantly elevated (p<0.01) in the groups ME 300, ME 600 after 7 and 24 h, however it was significantly elevated (p<0.01) only in ME 600 after 48 h of the treatment. Conclusion: Hence it can be concluded that Mimusops elengi L. has significant antihyperlipidemic effect owing to its ability to reduce the levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride and increasing the level of HDL.Keywords

The present study was undertaken to explore the effects of Cajanus indicus (Linn.) Mill. on airway inflammation and oxidative stress in ovalbumin-induced inflammation and antilipoxygenase activity in a murine model of asthma. The protective effect of extract of whole plant of Cajanus indicus (Linn.) Mill. against ovalbumin induced lung inflammation and arachidonic acid induced paw inflammation was evaluated. Hydroalcoholic extract of Cajanus indicus (Linn.) Mill.(CI) showed significant inhibition of total as well as differential leukocytes in the bronchalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid at dose of 350 and 525 mg/kg, p.o. (p<0.01).Pretreatment with CI significantly restored (p<0.01) the level of GSH, SOD,CATALASE and LPO in lungs. In BAL fluid, treatment of CI significantly reduced nitric oxide and total protein level. CI significantly inhibited arachidonic acid induced paw edema (p<0.01). Hence it can be concluded that Cajanus indicus (Linn.) Mill. has significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antilipoxygenase effect.Keywords

The bark of Tectona grandis Linn. is traditionally used in the treatment of diabetes. The present study was undertaken to study effect of ethanol extract of Tectona grandis (TG) in treatment of diabetes mellitus and associated cardiovascular complications in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal administration of prestandardised dose of alloxan and TG was given orally at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg. Effect of TG on various biochemical, hemodyamic were observed. Diabetic control showed significant increase (p<0.01) in biochemical, hemodyamic parameters (SAP, DAP, MAP), atherogenic index. TG treatment with for 42 days showed significant decrease (p<0.01) in biochemical parameters, atherogenic index and hemodyamic parameters when compared with diabetic control. Hence, the results obtained in the present study indicate that Tectona grandis may prevent the cardiac dysfunction in alloxan induced diabetic rats.Keywords

In the present study, the antiulcer activity of hydroalcoholic extract of ischolar_mains of Colebrookea oppositifolia Sm. (CO) was evaluated in ethanol and swim stress induced peptic ulcer models. In both the models, various parameters like ulcer index, percentage protection, gastric wall mucus, catalase, reduced glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were estimated. CO significantly reduced the ulcer index and increased the gastric wall mucus in both the models. CO showed significant antioxidant activity as indicated by significant decrease in LPO and increase in catalase, GSH and SOD levels in stomach tissue homogenate. The results suggest that hydroalcoholic extract of ischolar_mains of Colebrookea oppositifolia possess antiulcer activity due to its mucoprotective action and antioxidant potential.Keywords
